As part of the Swiss National Open Access Strategy, a delegation from swissuniversities is negotiating new agreements with the major scientific publishers including publishing in Open Access at no additional cost. Such "Read&Publish" agreements already exist with six publishers. In addition to the Open Access publishing option, all agreements offer read access to the content of the publisher.

 

Agreements for UniLu, PHs and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences

Elsevier (2020-2023)
The agreement covers articles by members of a Swiss higher education institution submitted from 1 January 2020. All journals published directly by Elsevier are included (list). For society journals and "The Lancet", the agreement is limited to read access.
Article types covered: Case Report, Data, Full Length Article, Microarticle, Original Software Publication, Practice Guidelines, Protocol, Review Articles (Journals), Replications Studies, Short Communication, Short Survey, Video Article

Springer (2023-2025)
The agreement covers articles by members of a Swiss higher education institution accepted from 1 January 2023. Included are journals by Springer and the journal Nature (title list Springer).

Taylor&Francis (2021-2023)
Publish Open Access in hybrid and Gold Open Access journals (list) at no additional cost, the number of articles per year covered by the agreement is limited throughout Switzerland.

Cambridge (2021-2023)

Wiley 2021-2024
Publish open access at no additional cost in about 1400 hybrid journals (list); access to about 1500 Wiley journals.

PLOS
As of 1 January 2022, there is a first agreement with a pure Open Access publisher: Members of the three Lucerne universities can publish unlimited in six of the twelve PLOS journals within the framework of the agreement if they are corresponding author: PLOS ONE, PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, PLOS Genetics, PLOS Computational Biology, PLOS Pathogens, PLOS Digital Health. To benefit from the agreement, authors must indicate UniLu, HSLU or PH as affiliation (instructions).

MDPI
Members of the Uni/HSLU/PH can publish with all MDPI journals at a 20% discount.

 

Agreement for members of UniLu only

Oxford University Press OUP (from 1 January 2023), for members of UniLu and PHs
Publish Open Access in the majority of OUP journals at no additional cost (list).

Agreements for members of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts only

Frontiers (only for members of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts)
Members of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts can publish in all Frontiers journals at no additional cost: The fee is paid directly through the Open Access Publication Fund of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Authors of the HSLU have to register with their institutional email address and indicate the HSLU as affiliation.

IEEE (only for members of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts)
Members of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts can publish in 25 open access journals (list: IEEE Open-Access-Journals) as of 1 January; hybrid journals are not included in the agreement. In order to benefit from the agreement, Corresponding Authors must register with their HSLU email address and indicate HSLU as an institution.

ACM (only for members of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts)
Since June 1, there is a Read&Publish Agreement with the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM). Members of the HSLU can publish Open Access in hundreds of ACM journals without additional costs (list) if they are Corresponding Authors, register with their institutional mail address and indicate the HSLU as Affiliation.

IOP (only for members of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts)
Since January 1, there is a Read&Publish Agreement with IOP Publishing. Members of the HSLU can publish Open Access in about 50 hybrid and 20 gold Open Access journals without additional costs.

 

Procedure with all publishers (except PLOS, see instructions above):

  •     Check whether the desired journal is included in the agreement (see lists above)
  •     Submit the article to the publisher's platform logging in with your institutional Email address
  •     Select "Gold Open Access" (it must be clear that Open Access is financed within the framework of the Swiss Agreement, see instructions above)
  •     Deadline for all publishers except Elsevier is the date on which the submitted manuscript is accepted, for Elsevier it is the submission date
  • The affiliation of the Corresponding Author determines whether an article is eligible
