It is important to distinguish between preserving the data structure (known as the bitstream) and the readability of the file format itself.

• Bitstream preservation:Zenodo is responsible for bitstream preservation for LORY. There are two copies of every file on separate servers. The ZHB is responsible for keeping an additional, in-house copy.
• File formats: There are currently no binding standards. It is crucial to avoid copy protection and proprietary formats that might prevent the files from being converted.
• Metadata and data curation: The ZHB ensures that its metadata is as standardized, explicit and high quality as possible.
